Bought this charge handle for my S&W shield. I have true glow fiber optic sights which seems to be a little bigger than the factory ones. That being said I took a little hobby knife to trim the back and around the sides to bring it in a little closer to tighten up the bolt. It works very well and no complaints on a personal note I personally don’t care for the way it looks like it almost needs to be a little lower profile on the top half but I understand that subjective and an opinion. But functionality it works great

As far as the unit in use I just got this so no experience for longevity yet. It did require a lot of trimming with an Exacto knife due to way too much over molding, I had to remove at least 1/16 ” from the slide area as it wouldn’t move. I also hade to trim all around the cutout around the area for the sights, At this point the unit fits well and is nice and tight and seems to work very well, time will tell, I makes racking this small compact S&W shield 1st. gen with a very heavy spring way easier for my old hands. Needed some work but well done!

I initially bought this to help my wife rack the slide but it turns out I love it too! The charging handle was easy to install and provides increased purchase for racking. Installation tip: hold the small nut in place with something round that fits in the hole (I used the flat end of a drill bit). This keeps the nut flat and in place so the screw threads can start. I applied a drop of blue Loctite 242 to the screw before inserting.

I purchased two of the charging handles, one for the Glock 43 and one for the S & W M & P Shield. They are a great idea and great products. I am a certified RSO and pistol instructor and I work regularly with first time gun owners and almost constantly have to deal with older people with arthritis and/or declining grip strength and young female shooters who struggle with racking the slide, especially with the M & P which is one of the worst to manage. It’s not unusual to see them pointing the muzzle all over the place while trying to rack the slide. Recover Tactical’s charging handles resolve the problem quickly at minimal expense. They do not interfere with the operation of the pistol action, the safety or the magazine release. With the exception of old style holsters with a retention strap they seem to work well with most holsters. They will probably require a longer safety strap if you have one on your holster. Installation was a snap on the Glock 43. Somewhat more challenging on the M & P but manageable even for a fumble fingered old guy. All in, they are a great safety feature for anyone experiencing a problem racking the slide. I will be recommending them to many of my students.

The Shield 1.0 has a really strong recoil spring and is difficult to rack that first round. Once racked it was not a problem with dropping and inserting a new magazine, last round open magazines, but since I clean and maintain all of my pistols on a regular basis, whether shot or not, my original leather thumb-break holster will no longer work. I prefer the thumb-break myself because I always worry about an accidental drop in public. This will not work with my DeSantis “thumb break” as the strap cannot be stretched another 1/2 inch. So I am now forced to purchase an “Open Top” leather holster holster with solid retention. So the plus is, yes, it is much easier to rack that first round or clear a stovepipe, misfeed. or light strike. I prefer the pancake leather holster, as a big guy with “dunlop disease”, over Kydex, but that is just my personal preference since I carry all day every day. I will just have to be MORE cautious. I will also have to practice drawing without using my thumb first..lol So until I receive my new DeSantis open top holster, I will have to daily carry something else. No biggie, just that $20 part now will cost me almost $100. I knew it was a possibility though.

I participate in several firearms forums and there are frequent comments about hard to rack handguns. This was true for me. At age 81 I struggled to rack my S & W Shield 9. This charging handle solved the problem. Not only is it functional but it was easy to install. Fit and finish make it appear as if it is part of the original gun. I have also purchased and installed a Recover mount for a laser sight. Great products and service.

The charging handle works as advertised, but was difficult to install by one person. The small nut kept slipping out of the long hole it was designed for. Finally had to use a long stick to hold the nut in place while trying to start the retaining screw from the other side…all the while trying to keep the two halves of the charging handle together.

Sirs, I am in my 70’s and have arthritis in my hands. It’s difficult to rack my Shield. I bought the slide assist and installed it. It was easy to put on with the included tool. What a difference this makes! It’s sooo much easier to rack the slide now! It does not show as it is not very wide, but it is still easy to grab and makes pulling the slide really easy. Although I love my little S&W Shield, racking the slide has always been a pain due to. I thought about getting the new “EZ” model, but didn’t see paying the extra amount for it. I was researching optics for a rifle and saw that Recover Tactical sold this charging handle for less than $20, I ordered it. I really like this. I almost wish it was an aluminum alloy and offered some color choices. However, it works. I have the M&P Shield m2.0perfomance series and, it can be hard to rack it. This is the perfect compliment for the pistol.

The Charging Handle performs perfectly. Due to four less vertebrae in my neck, I have dexterity and hand strength issues and this device aids superbly.
It basically makes the Shield into a Shield EZ. Installed properly, this will not interfere with any gun activity including shooting, transporting, and cleaning. Highly recommended for those that need assistance with racking.
